I hear that. I’d argue that the fact that I didn’t just drive myself into a ditch or drink bleach was an act of extreme optimism given the circumstances. Also using that comic tragedy to create short stories feels like optimism on a weird level but, yeah, the book has a bit of cynicism threaded throughout.
